What is depression?

Depressive disorder is a disease that affects the body, mood and thinking, of conceiving reality. It affects the normal cycle of sleep-wake and feeding. It alters the vision of how you value yourself (self esteem), and the way you think.

It is important to clarify that a depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood, which can be considered a normal reaction to a negative event (loss of a loved one, divorce, etc). However, if this state is prolonged in time or your symptoms worsen, impeding the proper development of everyday life, it can become a depressive disorder, hence the importance of the person to receive appropriate treatment.

Symptoms

These are the main symptoms of depressive disorder:

The person loses interest in almost all usual activities, and in which before had caused him pleasure.
Rather sad, hopeless, discouraged. Often uses expressions like ‘I’m inside a hole, “” I think I hit bottom. ”

There are eating disorders, usually decreased, along with a significant weight loss. Other people show an increased appetite or food intake, although there is no appetite and weight, and common sleep disorders, difficulty falling asleep, interrupted sleep, too much sleep (hypersomnia).

The psychomotor aspect undergoes changes: the person may have episodes of agitation, inability to stay quiet bursts of complaints or cries.
At the other extreme there is what is called “psychomotor slowing”, which translates into very slow to speak and slow body movements.

The person experiences a constant fatigue, even the smallest task can seem a difficult or impossible to achieve.

Then there is a feeling of worthlessness. The individual believes that everything has gone wrong, but remember their mistakes magnified. It complains even minute details, and searches the environment for signs that reinforce the idea that he is worthless.

There are feelings of guilt, also exaggerated, about past or present situations.Often the person has difficulty concentrating and making decisions that would cost or remember things past.

We present constant thoughts about death, which even lead to suicidal thoughts develop. Although you may feel afraid to die, yet to be convinced that he and others would be better if they died.

We also have symptoms such as frequent crying, feelings of anxiety, irritability, bad temper, excessive preoccupation with one’s physical health, panic attacks and phobias
